Dr. Sharon McGuinness is the Chief Executive Officer of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in Ireland since 2018. Prior to this, she was the Assistant Chief Executive for the Chemicals and Prevention Division within the Authority, with responsibility for division management, policy provision, advice and enforcement for a wide range of occupational health and safety, chemical and market surveillance legislation aimed at protecting human health and safety for workers and consumers. Paul Krajnik, Chair of ECHA’s Management Board says:” The new Executive Director will play an instrumental role for the Agency, which enters a crucial time in its work, marked by the EU’s ambitious objectives under the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS).”Future Key Actions that ECHA Proposed Under CSS
- Ban the most harmful chemicals in consumer products – allowing those chemicals only where their use is essential.
- Pay attention to the cocktail effect of chemicals when assessing chemical risks.
- Phase out per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the EU, unless their use is essential.
- Boost investment and innovative capacity for the production and use of chemicals that are safe and sustainable by design throughout their lifecycle.
- Promote the EU’s supply and sustainability of critical chemicals.
- Establish a simpler “one substance, one assessment” process for assessing the risks and hazards of chemicals.
- Play a leading role globally by championing and promoting high chemical safety standards and not exporting chemicals banned in the EU.
