BREAKING NEWS: ECHA Seeks Opinions on PFAS Restrictions

The European Chemicals Agency invites interested parties to send in scientific and technical information on the manufacture, placing on the market, and use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by 25 September 2023.
In a move to phase out per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) smoothly in the EU, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced a six-month consultation on the PFAS restriction proposal on 22 March 2023, which was submitted by the Danish, German, Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish authorities. Interested parties are encouraged to submit scientific and technical information on PFAS before 25 September 2023. ECHA's scientific committees for Risk Assessment (RAC) and for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) will use this information to evaluate the proposed restriction and form an opinion on it. The use of PFAS has raised concerns about the risks they pose to human health and the environment, as well as the availability of safer alternatives. The consultation will give anyone with information on PFAS an opportunity to voice their opinion, with a focus on relevant risks, socio-economic aspects, and alternative substances. ECHA will hold an online information session on 5 April to explain the restriction process and how to participate in the consultation. The session will feature experts from ECHA and the five national authorities who will respond to participants' questions. Additionally, SEAC's draft opinion on ECHA's proposal to ban the use of all PFAS in firefighting foams is open for a 60-day consultation until 15 May 2023. Those with information concerning firefighting foams are encouraged to submit it during this consultation. The European Commission, in conjunction with the EU Member States, will eventually decide on the potential restriction based on the proposal and the committees' opinion. We strongly urge stakeholders to actively participate in the consultation process to ensure that the PFAS restriction proposal is made more reasonable for enterprises.
