COSMETIC SAFETY ASSESSMENT TRAINING
REACH24H Korea led a three-hour workshop on product-specific risk assessment on September 3, 2026, as part of the Korea Cosmetic Association's advanced training program for cosmetic safety assessment professionals. Approximately 60 participants from cosmetics brands and manufacturers worked through exposure scenarios, Margin of Safety (MoS) calculations, and sensitization assessment using practical exercises.
The session was led by Mona Zhang, Technical Director of REACH24H Consulting Group's Consumer Products Division. Zhang has more than 14 years of experience in regulatory affairs and safety assessment across the chemical, food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical sectors. Her work includes toxicological and risk assessments for chemicals, cosmetics, and foods, as well as global regulatory compliance projects.
Applying Risk Assessment to Product Scenarios
The workshop focused on how exposure assessment can change with a product's type and conditions of use. Participants examined standard and special exposure scenarios, calculated MoS values, and worked through sensitization assessment examples. They solved problems individually before reviewing their results and receiving feedback.
A cosmetic safety assessment considers more than an ingredient's hazard profile. Assessors also need to account for where and how often a product is used, the amount applied, the route of exposure, and the characteristics of its intended users. The exercises gave participants an opportunity to apply these factors to product-specific assessments.
"We focused on having participants solve problems themselves and then receive review and feedback, rather than simply listening to explanations," said Choi Jae-hyuk, Senior Manager at REACH24H Korea. "We wanted the exercises to reflect the judgments they may need to make in practice."
Choi added that this was the team's first use of this hands-on training format. REACH24H Korea plans to use participant feedback and observations from the session to refine its examples and teaching approach.
