News Brief
On February 4, 2026, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) officially announced the addition of n-hexane and 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol and its salts to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) under the EU REACH Regulation. Till now, the SVHC List contains 253 entries.
Newly Added Substances: n-hexane and 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol and its salts
The following table outlines the specifics of the newly added substances:
| Substance Name | EC Number | CAS Number | Reason for Inclusion | Example of Uses |
| n-Hexane | 203-777-6 | 110-54-3 | Specific target organ toxicity after repeated exposure (Article 57(f) - human health) | Formulation, polymer processing, coatings and cleaning agent |
| 4,4'-[2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidene]diphenol and its salts | - | - | Toxic for reproduction (Article 57c) | Process regulator and cross-linking agent |
Key Obligations of SVHC Under REACH
To safeguard human health and the environment, the European Union continues to enhance the identification and management of high-risk chemicals. Companies exporting to the EU must stay vigilant about updates to the SVHC List and ensure compliance with REACH obligations. Below are the key requirements:
Communication Obligations for Products with a concentration above 0.1% for SVHCs
Substances and Mixtures: A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) compliant with REACH must be provided to downstream users.
Articles: Safe use instructions must be communicated, including the name of the SVHC. Consumers can request this information, and suppliers must provide it free of charge within 45 days.
SVHC Notification
If the SVHC content in an article exceeds 0.1% and the export volume surpasses 1 tonne/year, manufacturers, importers, or Only Representatives (OR) must submit an SVHC notification to ECHA. Notifications for newly added SVHCs must be completed within 6 months of their inclusion in the list.
SCIP Notification
Under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD), products containing SVHCs above 0.1% must complete SCIP notification before being marketed in the EU.
EU Ecolabel Restrictions
Under the EU Ecolabel Regulation, products containing SVHCs cannot have the ecolabel award.
