China: Four Disinfection Product Standards Take Effect on 1 December 2026

Updated on

CHINA DISINFECTION STANDARDS UPDATE

On 16 June 2026 the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NCDPA) issued a notice covering ten health-industry standards. Five of them concern disinfection; four concern disinfection products. All ten take effect on 1 December 2026, and a 2011 standard is repealed on the same date.

This article explains what the four product-related standards cover, how they relate to existing standards, and their implications for disinfection product compliance and filing in China.

Effective: 1 December 2026Four product-related standardsWS/T industry standards

WS/T 10050—2026: Hygienic requirements for ultraviolet disinfection lamp

Terminology: These are health-industry standards (WS/T), issued by the NCDPA. They are not national standards (GB).

What it covers. The standard sets out requirements for UV disinfection lamps: raw materials, technical requirements, method of use, application scope, transport and storage, and instructions. It applies to lamps that use UVC radiation in the 200–280 nm range as the germicidal agent.

Related standards. Ultraviolet disinfection appliances are covered separately by GB 28235—2020, which also applies to appliances using UVC in the 200–280 nm range. The lamps themselves also have a product standard, GB/T 19258.1—2022, but it sits on the lighting side rather than the health side: it was proposed by the China National Light Industry Council and is administered by the national lighting standards committee (SAC/TC 224).

What it means for filing. Both the lamp and the appliance are disinfection devices, and both appear in Chinese filing records. A lamp is not simply a component inside a filed appliance. Until now, however, the lamp had no product standard of its own on the health side, so it had to be assessed by reference to the appliance standard. WS/T 10050 gives the lamp its own benchmark.

WS/T 10051—2026: Evaluation method for long-lasting disinfection effect of disinfectants in laboratory

What it covers. A laboratory test method and evaluation rules for long-lasting disinfection, applicable to disinfectants used on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Related standards. The corresponding product standard is GB 27952—2020, general requirements for ordinary object-surface disinfectants.

One thing to note. Until now, a claim of long-lasting efficacy was essentially confined to antibacterial preparations (持续抗菌). Disinfectants had no corresponding evaluation method, and therefore no basis on which to claim long-lasting disinfection. This standard supplies the laboratory method, which gives disinfectants a basis for a long-lasting disinfection (持续消毒) claim.

What it means for filing. This is an evaluation method rather than a product standard, so it does not change how a product is classified. It affects what has to be tested, and how the result is judged, in the hygiene and safety evaluation report for an object-surface disinfectant — a Class II product.

WS/T 10053—2026: Hygienic requirements for generator of hypochlorous acid disinfectant

What it covers. Raw material requirements, technical requirements, application scope, method of use, test methods, transport and storage, and nameplate and instructions, for generators that produce hypochlorous acid disinfectant. It applies to both compounding generators, which produce hypochlorous acid by reacting sodium or potassium hypochlorite with hydrochloric acid or another acid, and electrolytic generators, which electrolyse hydrochloric acid and/or sodium chloride solution.

The standard also defines the product it regulates: hypochlorous acid disinfectant is one in which hypochlorous acid accounts for 85% or more of the available chlorine, at a pH of 4.0 to 6.5.

Related standards. This is where the line against sodium hypochlorite becomes important. The earlier standard, GB 28233—2020, covers sodium hypochlorite generators, which take salt as the raw material and produce sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient.

Both are disinfection devices, and both are filed. Sodium hypochlorite generators have had a dedicated product standard since 2011, while hypochlorous acid products did not. WS/T 10053 supplies what was missing.

What it means for filing. Generators of this kind are disinfection devices and are filed. The new standard gives applicants a product standard to work to, where previously the evaluation had to be assembled from other documents.

WS/T 10054—2026: Evaluation method of mycobactericidal effect

What it covers. Basic requirements, evaluation methods and evaluation rules for mycobactericidal effect, applicable to disinfectants and to disinfection devices that generate chemical disinfecting agents.

Related standards. This is the only one of the four that replaces an existing standard: WS/T 327—2011 is repealed on the same date. Related methods include GB/T 38497—2020 for endoscope disinfection and WS/T 10015—2024 for endoscope sterilisation; the product standard for medical device disinfectants is GB 27949—2020.

What it means for filing. Mycobacteria are the reference organisms for high-level disinfection of endoscopes and medical devices. A change of method here reaches Class I products most directly — the class with the strictest filing requirements and a four-year validity period.
