ECHA: One Hazardous Chemical Added to SVHC Candidate List

On 10 June 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added n-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide (NMA) to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) under EU REACH as it may cause cancer or genetic defects. It is mostly used in polymers and when manufacturing other chemicals, textiles, leather, or fur. With the addition of NMA, the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) now comprises 224 substances that may have serious effects on human health or the environment.

NMA Added to SVHC Candidate List

# Substance name EC number CAS number Reason for inclusion Examples of use(s)
1 N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide 213-103-2 924-42-5 Carcinogenic; Mutagenic As a monomer for polymerisation, as a fluoroalkyl acrylate copolymer, and in paints and coatings.

What is SVHC Candidate List?

According to EU REACH regulation, substances that may have serious and often irreversible effects on human health and the environment can be identified as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs). If a substance is identified as SVHC, it will be added to the Candidate List for eventual inclusion in the Authorization List. Besides, companies are responsible for managing the risks of these chemicals and must also give their customers and consumers enough information to use them safely.

Things to Notice for Companies

Companies have legal obligations when their substance is included– either on its own, in mixtures or in articles – in the Candidate List under EU REACH. Suppliers that supplied either on their own or in mixtures must give their customers and consumers enough information to be able to use them safely, by providing their customers with a safety data sheet(SDS). Consumers have the right to ask suppliers whether the products they buy contain substances of very high concern. And if suppliers produce articles that contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs), they must notify SVHCs to ECHA’s substances of concern in products (SCIP) database under the Waste Framework Directive. Importers and producers of articles will have to notify ECHA if their article contains N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide within six months from 10 June 2022. Reference Link: ECHA
