CAS REGISTRY NUMBER APPLICATION & VERIFICATION

Need to verify an existing CAS Registry Number® (CAS RN®) or request a CAS RN or CA Index Name for a new or complex substance? Accurate substance identity is essential before a CAS result is used in an SDS, chemical inventory check, customs document, or regulatory submission.

REACH24H reviews substance identity, identifies technical data gaps, helps select the appropriate CAS service route, prepares supporting information, and assists with follow-up. Our support is suitable for proprietary chemicals, polymers, UVCBs, reaction products, extracts, biotechnological products, and substances intended for global chemical compliance projects.

Quick Navigation

Choose the Right CAS Registry Number Service Route

A CAS RN is a unique identifier assigned to a specific substance in CAS REGISTRY. However, a CAS RN does not by itself confirm chemical inventory listing, registration, approval, or permission for a particular market use. The appropriate route depends on whether the substance is already known, whether the available identity information is consistent, and how the result will be used.

Your NeedLikely RoutePractical Next Step
Find the CAS RN of a common, known substanceCAS Common ChemistryStart with the official CAS Common Chemistry search, which covers nearly 500,000 frequently used substances.
Confirm whether a chemical name or CAS RN matches an existing recordCAS Registry LookupUse the official CAS Registry Lookup Service. REACH24H can first review conflicting names, numbers, or supplier data where the match is uncertain.
Obtain a CAS RN or CA Index Name for a new, proprietary, or complex substanceCAS Registry Services consultationComplete substance identity scoping, data gap review, route assessment, and technical information preparation before the request is submitted.
Prepare substance identity information for a U.S. EPA PMNCAS Inventory Expert Service (IES)Assess the chemical identity information required for the applicable U.S. TSCA pathway and align the CAS result with the PMN dossier.

When professional support adds the most value: the substance identity is complex, supplier information is inconsistent, a new CAS RN or CA Index Name may be needed, confidentiality must be considered, or the result will be used in a regulatory submission.

Who Needs CAS RN Verification or Application Support?

This service is primarily intended for chemical manufacturers, exporters, importers, formulators, R&D teams, regulatory affairs teams, and supply chain compliance teams that need to establish or confirm substance identity.

  • Companies developing or commercializing a new, proprietary, patented, or pre-commercial substance;

  • Teams preparing an EU REACH, U.S. TSCA, China New Chemical Substance Registration, K-REACH, Japan CSCL/ISHL, or other regulatory submission;

  • Companies receiving inconsistent CAS numbers, substance names, synonyms, or identity information from suppliers or third-party databases;

  • Companies preparing SDSs, labels, customs documents, technical dossiers, or chemical inventory checks;

  • Businesses handling polymers, UVCBs, reaction products, extracts, enzymes, proteins, industrial process products, or other complex substances;

  • Teams unsure whether a commercial material should be assessed as one distinct substance or by its individual components.

Substance Types and Identity Scenarios We Support

CAS REGISTRY covers organic and inorganic compounds, metals and alloys, minerals, coordination compounds, organometallics, elements, isotopes, proteins, nucleic acids, polymers, and UVCBs. The information needed for a search or application depends on how clearly the substance can be defined.

Substance TypeDescriptionExample
Well-defined chemical compoundsChemically distinct substances with a clear molecular identityBenzene, CAS RN 71-43-2
Polymeric substancesPolymers and copolymers requiring reactant and polymerization informationPolyethylene glycol, CAS RN 25322-68-3
Complex reaction products / UVCBsSubstances of unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products, or biological materialsPhosphoric acid, reaction products with urea, CAS RN 68784-29-2
Plant and animal productsExtracts, derivatives, or processed biological-source substancesSpinach extract, CAS RN 90131-25-2
Industrial process productsPetroleum fractions, by-products, distillates, or other process-derived substancesDistillates (petroleum), steam-cracked, polymd., CAS RN 68131-77-1
Biotechnological productsProteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, or other bioproductsProtease, CAS RN 9001-92-7

Commercial mixtures and trade products require careful assessment. Ordinary formulated mixtures are generally assessed by their individual components, while some polymers, UVCBs, reaction products, extracts, or industrial process products may qualify as distinct substances. Broad categories, undefined trade products, finished formulations, living organisms, and insufficiently described materials may not be suitable for CAS RN assignment.

Information to Prepare for CAS RN Search or Application

Companies should provide as much consistent substance identity information as possible. Incomplete or conflicting data may lead to a mismatched result, an unsuitable service route, supplementary questions, or additional processing time.

Substance TypeInformation Usually Required
Well-defined chemical compoundsMolecular formula, structural formula, stereochemistry where applicable, chemical names, purity, and impurity information
Polymeric substancesMonomer or reactant details, reaction mechanism, structural type, representative structure, molecular weight information, and polymerization process

REACH24H CAS RN Service Process

STEP 01

Identity and Objective Review

Review the substance name, structure, composition, manufacturing process, source, analytical data, existing identifiers, intended use, and target market.

STEP 02

Data Gap and Route Assessment

Determine whether the available information supports a lookup, verification, CA Index Name request, CAS RN assignment, or a regulatory-specific route such as IES.

STEP 03

Technical Information Preparation

Organize the required structural, compositional, process-related, source-related, and analytical information, and address identified inconsistencies where possible.

STEP 04

Request and Follow-up Support

Support the selected CAS request route, communication, and responses to supplementary information questions. Final assignment remains subject to CAS review.

STEP 05

Result and Regulatory-Use Review

Review the CAS RN and/or CA Index Name result and assess its appropriate use in SDSs, inventory checks, customs documents, and regulatory dossiers.

Timeline and Cost Factors

Lookup and assignment requests have different timelines. CAS currently states that a simple Registry Lookup for a matching chemical name or CAS RN is generally returned within 24 hours, excluding weekends and holidays. CAS also states that substance information and CAS RN assignment requests are processed within 10 working days after all required information has been received. REACH24H's project timeline may also include identity review, data gap resolution, technical preparation, and follow-up.

The overall timeline and cost may be affected by:

  • Whether the substance already has a matching CAS REGISTRY record;

  • The selected route, including lookup, verification, CA Index Name confirmation, CAS RN assignment, or IES;

  • The complexity of the substance, especially polymers, UVCBs, extracts, enzymes, reaction products, and industrial process products;

  • The completeness and consistency of the available identity information;

  • Supplementary information or clarification requested during review;

  • Confidentiality considerations and the intended regulatory use of the result;

  • Any downstream compliance review required after the result is received.

A case-specific assessment is therefore required before a practical project estimate can be provided. Official CAS fees and processing information should also be confirmed at the time of the request through CAS Registry Services.

Confidentiality and Publication Considerations

Confidentiality should be assessed before a CAS request is submitted, especially for novel, proprietary, patented, or pre-commercial substances. CAS states that request processing is confidential. However, the assignment of a new CAS RN makes the substance identity publicly available in CAS REGISTRY; companies seeking to maintain substance identity confidentiality may need to consider a CA Index Name-only request instead.

Companies should also review how CAS information will be used in public documents, product databases, commercial platforms, SDSs, supplier communications, or regulatory submissions. CAS indicates that licensing may be required when CAS Registry Numbers are published to the public or used to support a publicly or commercially available platform. REACH24H can help clarify the intended use and identify questions that should be resolved before submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a CAS RN search always result in a new CAS Registry Number?

No. If the substance already exists in CAS REGISTRY, the result may confirm an existing CAS RN and/or CA Index Name. A new CAS RN may be assigned only if CAS determines that the submitted information describes a unique new substance accepted for inclusion. REACH24H cannot guarantee the final assignment outcome.

Is a CAS Registry Number the same as chemical registration or market approval?

No. A CAS RN is a substance identifier. It does not mean that the substance is registered, approved, listed on a particular chemical inventory, or permitted for a specific use. A separate regulatory assessment may still be required for each target market.

Can a mixture or commercial product have one CAS RN?

It depends on the material. Ordinary formulated mixtures are generally assessed by their component substances. Some UVCBs, reaction products, polymers, extracts, or industrial process products may be treated as distinct substances, but the conclusion requires a case-specific identity review.

Do I need a CAS RN for SDS preparation?

CAS RNs are commonly used in SDSs to identify substances and ingredients, but an SDS requires more than a CAS number. Classification, composition, concentration, disclosure rules, and local regulatory requirements must also be assessed.

How long does CAS RN verification or application take?

The route determines the timeline. CAS currently indicates 24 hours for a simple matching Registry Lookup and 10 working days for substance information or CAS RN assignment after all required information is received. Identity review, data preparation, missing information, and follow-up can extend the overall project timeline.

What should I prepare, and how should confidentiality be handled?

Prepare the substance name, structure, formula, composition, manufacturing process, source information, analytical data, existing identifiers, intended use, and target market where available. Confidentiality should be discussed before submission because a newly assigned CAS RN makes the substance identity publicly available in CAS REGISTRY; a CA Index Name-only request may be more suitable in some confidential cases.
