US Approves Amendment to Ban PFASs as Food Contact Materials

On June 14, 2022, the Keep Food Containers Safe From PFAS Act was passed as an amendment to the FDA Safety and Landmark Advancements (FDASLA) Act of 2022 on a bipartisan vote (13-9) in the Senate Committee on Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP). This bill was firstly introduced by Maggie Hassan, Debbie Dingel, and Don Young, on November 18, 2021. And it will ban the use of PFAS (perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances) in food packaging.

What is PFAS and Why it's a Threat?

PFAS (perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group, or class, of fluorinated chemicals that are widely used in consumer products and industrial processes. Often referred to as “forever chemicals,” PFAS are extremely resistant to breakdown and can build up in humans and animals. They can also spread quickly in the environment and can be harmful to humans and many other species at extremely low doses. Known health effects include cancer, liver disease, decreased fertility, hormone disruption, developmental harm, and effects on the immune system— including decreased response to vaccines.
