News Brief
Syngenta Crop Protection AG has submitted a comprehensive list of intended studies to the relevant EU authorities to support its application for the renewal of the active substance mesotrione. This submission is a key step in the regulatory process governed by Regulation (EU) 2020/1740.
This move by Syngenta initiates the next phase of the renewal process for mesotrione, a widely used herbicide. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recently concluded a public consultation (PC‑1663) on this list of studies, the deadline for which was 12 November 2025. The consultation allowed interested parties to provide input on the proposed research.
What is Mesotrione
Mesotrione is a systemic herbicide belonging to the triketone chemical class, widely used for selective weed control in maize. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme 4‑hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), leading to chlorosis and death of susceptible plants. As with all EU‑approved active substances, its renewal involves a complete re‑evaluation of human health, environmental, and ecotoxicological data to confirm that it continues to meet the safety criteria under Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009.
Next Steps
Upon closure of the consultation, EFSA will review all contributions and integrate relevant input into its pre‑submission advice. Syngenta is required to provide a dossier to support the renewal of mesotrione by May 31, 2029.
